39 Dead, Four-Month-Old Baby Remains Missing After June Floods

A four-month-old baby is still missing nearly two months after the devastating June 29 floods that affected communities in seven regions, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed has revealed.

The baby is the only person who remains officially unaccounted for following the disaster, which left 39 people dead and affected 91,989 individuals from 18,398 households across 77 districts.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, Muntaka said recovery efforts had accounted for those affected, but the whereabouts of the infant remained unknown.

According to him, the Greater Accra Region suffered the greatest impact, recording 56,022 affected persons across 27 districts and 17 deaths. The Central Region followed with 21,882 people affected across 16 districts and eight fatalities.

In the Volta Region, 9,466 people across seven districts were affected, with four deaths recorded.

The Ashanti Region reported 1,461 affected persons across 16 districts, while Western North recorded 937 affected persons across six districts, with no fatalities.

The Western Region also recorded about 2,000 affected people across two districts. One district in the Eastern Region was affected as well, although the minister did not provide figures for the number of people impacted there.

The figures highlight the extensive damage caused by the June 29 floods, which displaced households, disrupted communities and resulted in significant loss of life.

However, the continued disappearance of the infant means the disaster has yet to reach closure for the child’s family.

Muntaka did not disclose details about how the baby went missing or provide an update on the latest search and recovery efforts.
