68 Injured After Two Granbird Buses Collide on Kumasi-Accra Highway

A total of 68 people were involved in a road crash involving two Granbird buses on the Kumasi-Accra Highway, with 67 passengers sustaining various degrees of injury.

The accident occurred at about 10:31 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Duapompo along the highway, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The buses involved were a VIP Granbird, registered GW-5373-23 and owned by Chairman ION, and a KN KIA Granbird, registered AK-980-26 and owned by KOD Transport. The vehicles were reportedly being driven by Simon Azuma and Francis Yeboah respectively.

Each bus was carrying 34 passengers at the time of the collision.

According to the GNFS, members of the public rescued 67 injured passengers before emergency responders arrived at the scene. The victims were subsequently transported to the Konongo Government Hospital for medical attention.

The driver of the VIP bus was trapped inside the vehicle following the crash and had to be rescued by personnel from the Fire Service.

The GNFS said its rescue team used a spreader in a dashboard roll method to extricate the driver before he was transported to hospital in an ambulance.

The collision caused partial damage to the front section of the VIP Granbird and the rear portion of the KN KIA Granbird.

Authorities have not yet established what caused the accident.

The GNFS said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The latest incident has once again drawn attention to road safety, particularly on major highways where commercial buses transport large numbers of passengers daily.
