Accra mayor inspects school projects, announces additional interventions ahead of reopening

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has inspected ongoing school infrastructure projects across the Accra Metropolis to assess the progress and quality of renovation works ahead of the reopening of public basic schools.

The inspection, conducted on Monday, August 31, 2026, covered the Aayalolo Cluster of Schools and the Private Odartey Lamptey Basic School, where the Mayor assessed the level of completion and interacted with officials overseeing the projects.

At the Aayalolo Cluster of Schools, the Mayor inspected renovation works on several classroom facilities and reaffirmed the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s commitment to providing safe and conducive learning environments for pupils and teachers.

He announced that the Assembly would undertake additional interventions beyond those captured in the existing renovation contract to further improve conditions at the school. He also disclosed that painting of the school blocks would commence the following week.

As part of efforts to improve security, the Mayor announced plans to install 20 streetlights around the school compound to enhance visibility, particularly at night.

He further directed the Head of the Works Department to ensure that the school grounds are paved within the next six months. The intervention, he explained, would improve accessibility while reducing dust and mud around the school.

On security, Hon. Allotey said Metro Guards would be deployed to the school to provide 24-hour security, stressing the importance of protecting public educational facilities from damage, misuse and unauthorised access.

At the Private Odartey Lamptey Basic School, the Mayor was informed that renovation works had reached approximately 90 per cent completion, with the remaining works expected to be completed soon.

He directed project supervisors and contractors to ensure that the outstanding works were completed to the required standards, emphasising the Assembly’s expectation of value for money from investments in educational infrastructure.

Hon. Allotey said the inspections formed part of the AMA’s broader monitoring efforts to ensure that projects across the metropolis are completed according to specification and ultimately serve the needs of residents.

He noted that improving school infrastructure remains critical to creating a safe and conducive environment for effective teaching and learning, adding that the Assembly would continue to identify and address infrastructure challenges confronting public schools within its jurisdiction.

The Mayor was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for the Odododiodioo Constituency, Hon. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie; Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful; Presiding Member and Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Musah Ziyad; and Heads of the Works and Public Affairs Departments, among other Assembly officials.
