AMA Directs Aboboyaa Operators to Install Reflective Stickers by August 31

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed operators of motorized tricycles, popularly known as “Aboboyaa,” to install highly visible reflective stickers on the rear and sides of their vehicles by August 31, 2026.

The directive forms part of measures to improve the visibility of Aboboyaa at night and reduce road accidents involving the vehicles.

In addition to the reflective stickers, operators are required to wear reflective vests or other reflective clothing while riding, particularly to make them more visible to other road users in low-light conditions.

The AMA has also introduced restrictions on where Aboboyaa operators can ride on major roads. Under the directive, operators are prohibited from using the inner lanes of major roads.

They are instead required to use designated side or service roads where such routes are available. Where there are no side or service roads, Aboboyaa riders must keep to the far-right outer lane.

The Assembly has warned that operators who fail to comply with the directives will face sanctions.

The measures are aimed at promoting safer road use, improving the visibility of motorized tricycles and reducing the risk of accidents involving Aboboyaa riders and other road users.
