The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to deploy undercover officers to board commercial vehicles as passengers and monitor drivers who charge fares above approved rates.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced the move at a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, warning that drivers found charging unauthorised fares would be arrested and dealt with according to law.

The exercise will focus mainly on early mornings and peak hours, when some drivers allegedly take advantage of increased passenger demand to raise fares. Major routes and terminals, including Lapaz, Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa, Madina, Nima and Circle, will be monitored.

The AMA has urged drivers to comply with approved fares and encouraged commuters to report fare abuses, providing the vehicle’s registration number, via 0544 916 4628.
