Boadu Takes Lead in NPP Chairmanship Race as Kodua Dominates General Secretary Poll

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has emerged as the leading candidate in the party’s National Chairman race, according to a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics.

The poll, released on August 20, 2026, puts Mr Boadu ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko in what is expected to be a closely contested race for the party’s top executive position.

The survey indicates that 27% of NPP voters favour John Boadu for National Chairman, while 15% back Boakye Agyarko and 10% support Paul Afoko. However, 47% of respondents have not yet decided on their preferred candidate, leaving a significant portion of the electorate still up for grabs.

Mr Boadu also records the highest favourability rating among the three candidates. He has a 61% favourable rating against 12% unfavourable, giving him a net approval score of 49%.

Boakye Agyarko records 50% favourable and 17% unfavourable ratings, resulting in a net approval of 34%. Paul Afoko also has a 50% favourable rating, while 18% view him unfavourably, giving him a net approval of 32%.

Regional performance

John Boadu leads among the named candidates in several regions, including Bono East with 43%, Greater Accra with 38%, North East with 38%, Northern with 29%, Upper East with 41% and Central with 27%.

Boakye Agyarko remains competitive, recording 23% in Bono East, 22% in Greater Accra and 21% in the Central Region.

Paul Afoko’s strongest support comes from the Savannah Region, where he records 22%, followed by 19% in the North East.

A significant number of voters remain undecided in several regions. The figure stands at 71% in Ashanti, 63% in both Oti and Upper West, 60% in Western North and 56% in the Volta Region.

Kodua leads General Secretary race

Incumbent General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong has established a wider lead in his contest, according to the poll.

Mr Kodua attracts 36% support, followed by Eugene Antwi with 10%, Sylvester Tetteh with 5% and Charles Dwamena with 3%. Another 46% of respondents have not chosen a candidate.

Kodua’s strongest regional performances are recorded in the Central Region at 60%, Greater Accra at 54%, Bono East at 44%, Upper East at 43%, Northern at 40%, Ahafo at 39% and North East at 39%.

Eugene Antwi performs best in Bono East with 30%, followed by 18% in the Volta Region and 14% in Greater Accra.

Titus Glover leads National Organiser race

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover is also leading the National Organiser contest, although half of those surveyed remain undecided.

Mr Glover has 23% support, compared with 14% for Salam Mustapha, 8% for Alhaji Ismaela Ibrahim and 5% for Kwame A. Prempeh. As many as 50% of respondents expressed no preference.

Glover’s strongest showing is in the Northern Region, where he records 35%. He also receives 28% in the Volta Region and 27% each in Ahafo and Greater Accra.

Salam Mustapha leads in Oti with 28%, while recording 25% in Upper West and 24% in Upper East.

Alhaji Ismaela Ibrahim’s strongest performances are in Bono at 28%, North East at 23% and Upper West at 21%. Kwame A. Prempeh performs best in Bono East, where he records 21%.

Chairmanship preferences influence other races

The survey also suggests a link between voters’ choices in the chairmanship race and their preferences for General Secretary and National Organiser.

Among supporters of John Boadu, 63% favour Justin Kodua Frimpong for General Secretary. Kodua also receives support from 53% of Boakye Agyarko supporters and 49% of Paul Afoko supporters.

Eugene Antwi attracts 21% of Agyarko supporters, 15% of Boadu supporters and 19% of Afoko supporters.

Titus Glover similarly leads among supporters of all three leading chairmanship candidates. He receives support from 43% of Agyarko supporters, 36% of Boadu supporters and 34% of Afoko supporters.

Salam Mustapha attracts 20% of Agyarko supporters, 24% of Boadu supporters and 31% of Afoko supporters.

The findings indicate that although the chairmanship race remains competitive, Kodua and Glover have support across the camps of the leading chairmanship contenders.

High undecided vote keeps contests open

The large number of undecided voters remains a major feature of the survey. While 47% are undecided in the chairmanship contest, 46% have yet to choose a General Secretary candidate and 50% remain undecided in the National Organiser race.

Consequently, the current leads enjoyed by John Boadu, Justin Kodua Frimpong and Titus Glover do not necessarily guarantee victory, with a substantial proportion of voters yet to make their choices.

Global InfoAnalytics conducted the poll through telephone interviews between August 10 and 12, 2026. The survey involved 2,557 respondents across all 16 regions, using probability random sampling, regional quotas and the 2024 Electoral Commission register as the sampling frame.

The poll has a reported 99% confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.56 percentage points.
