Cabinet To Finalise Position Paper Friday As Ghana Moves To Review 1992 Constitution

Cabinet is expected to finalise government’s position paper on Friday as Ghana takes a major step toward reviewing the 1992 Constitution.

The move is part of broader efforts to assess provisions of the country’s governing charter and make recommendations for reform ahead of any proposed amendments.

Speaking on the planned review, President John Dramani Mahama said the exercise is intended to strengthen the 1992 Constitution and ensure it remains relevant for generations to come.
According to the President, the review will seek to preserve the gains made under the Fourth Republic while addressing areas that require updates to meet present-day governance challenges.

The 1992 Constitution has governed Ghana for over three decades and has been credited with providing stability, democratic governance, and respect for human rights.

Stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society, and political parties, are expected to be engaged as part of the consultation process once Cabinet adopts the government’s position paper.

The finalisation of the paper on Friday is seen as a key step that will set the tone for the scope, focus, and timeline of the constitutional review process.
