Ghana Police Service probe officer accused of pulling gun during vehicle towing dispute

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has referred to the Ghana Police Service an incident involving a police officer who allegedly threatened personnel of a towing company with a firearm during a dispute over a wrongly parked vehicle.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, the Assembly said the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at Roman Hill in Kumasi’s Central Business District.

According to the KMA, personnel of Day and Night Towing Service, a company contracted by the Assembly, had clamped a saloon car parked in an unauthorised location and were in the process of towing when a uniformed police officer, identified as Y.E. Aboagye, arrived and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

The Assembly said the officer questioned the towing team’s authority to remove the vehicle, leading to a heated verbal exchange.

It alleged that during the confrontation, the officer threatened to shoot one of the towing personnel in the foot if they proceeded with the exercise.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate and highly avoidable,” the KMA said it has officially reported the matter to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.

The Assembly also clarified that the incident did not involve its Security Taskforce, urging the public to disregard claims on social media suggesting otherwise.

“The public is therefore urged to disregard any false information linking the said video to the KMA Security Taskforce,” the statement concluded.
