The Global Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship operated by Mercy Ships, has arrived at the Port of Tema, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare sector.

The arrival was welcomed by the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, as Ghana begins its fifth Mercy Ships field service and the first-ever visit of the Global Mercy to the country.

As part of the 10-month field service, the hospital ship is expected to provide thousands of Ghanaians with access to specialised healthcare services at no cost. Between 1,950 and 2,600 free surgeries are expected to be performed, offering life-changing treatment to patients who may otherwise struggle to access specialised surgical care.

In addition to the surgeries, between 1,610 and 2,145 people are expected to receive free dental treatments. The initiative will also focus on strengthening Ghana’s healthcare workforce, with an estimated 100 to 250 healthcare professionals, including surgeons and nurses, expected to benefit from specialised training and capacity-building programmes.

The programme is designed not only to treat patients but also to leave a lasting impact on Ghana’s healthcare system by equipping local medical professionals with advanced knowledge and skills that can be applied long after the ship’s departure.

The Global Mercy’s visit therefore represents more than the provision of free medical services. It is an opportunity to expand access to specialised surgery, improve dental health, strengthen professional expertise and support Ghana’s efforts to build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system.

For thousands of patients and their families, the arrival of the hospital ship could mean renewed hope, restored health and a better quality of life.
