Government threatens to terminate Techiman–Wenchi road contract over slow progress

The Minister for Roads and Highways, has warned that the government will terminate the contract awarded to Volta Impex Construction for the 32-kilometre Techiman–Nkonsia–Wenchi road project if the contractor fails to significantly improve the pace of work.

The warning follows concerns over the contractor’s failure to meet agreed construction timelines despite several directives from the Ghana Highway Authority.

The project was expected to have recorded between 15 and 20 per cent physical progress by now. However, work currently stands at only six per cent, raising concerns about the contractor’s ability to deliver the project within the agreed timeframe.

Mr Agbodza issued the warning during a site inspection as part of his tour of selected road projects across the Bono, Bono East, Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions.

He said the government would no longer tolerate delays on critical road projects and would take a firm decision on the future of the contract after meeting with the contractor on Monday, September 7.

The Minister expressed particular concern over the slow progress, noting that the contractor had received GH¢66 million in mobilisation funds in May to enable it to commence and accelerate construction works.

“The contractor hasn’t shown enough commitment to complete this job. Some mobilisation has been paid, and the contractor is not here. We’ll make a firm decision on Monday, [September 7],” Mr Agbodza said.

The government’s decision will depend on the outcome of the scheduled meeting and whether the contractor can demonstrate a credible plan to accelerate work and meet the project’s outstanding targets.
