Gov’t to intervene amidst fuel price hikes – Institute for Energy Security
The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has called for immediate government intervention to protect consumers from the severe financial impacts of recent increases in petroleum product prices.
In a press release issued on 3 August 2026, the energy think tank expressed deep concern over the upward adjustment in fuel prices across the country, warning that it continues to inflict significant financial hardship on households, transport operators, and businesses.
As fuel remains a vital input for transportation, commerce, manufacturing, and agriculture, the IES cautioned that sustained pump price increases will inevitably lead to severe knock-on effects.
According to the institute, these include: higher transport fares, rising food prices, Increased production costs, renewed inflationary pressure, which will further erode household purchasing power and place increased pressure on businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The IES further stated that, while it acknowledges fuel prices are largely dictated by international crude oil prices, foreign exchange movements, and the petroleum pricing framework, the government cannot remain passive when external shocks threaten the stability of the economy and the welfare of citizens.
The institute reminded authorities of a precedent set earlier this year, wherein the government intervened by absorbing fuel prices by approximately GH¢2.00 per litre to provide consumer relief.
“That intervention demonstrated Government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians from the full impact of petroleum price volatility and underscored the importance of timely policy responses in periods of rising fuel prices,” the statement read.
Believing that current market conditions warrant a similar response, the IES urged the government to urgently engage stakeholders and implement identical relief measures to mitigate the impact of the latest price hikes.
