Heavy security deployed at Laboma Beach as authorities prepare to carry out a major demolition exercise

A heavy security presence has been deployed at Laboma Beach as authorities prepare to carry out a major demolition exercise aimed at addressing persistent flooding in parts of Accra.

The operation, led by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), follows recent clean-up campaigns, desilting of drains and earlier demolitions carried out after the devastating June 29 floods that affected several parts of the capital.

Security personnel, including police and military officers, were stationed around the area on Friday ahead of the exercise, restricting access to sections of the beach while officials coordinated preparations for the demolition.

The planned exercise is expected to target unauthorised structures within the enclave as authorities intensify measures to restore natural drainage channels and reduce the risk of flooding, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed that developments on waterways, wetlands and other unauthorised locations remain a major contributor to flooding and have warned that enforcement actions will continue across affected areas.

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has maintained that the exercise is intended to safeguard lives and property by ensuring strict compliance with planning and environmental regulations.
