Mahama Cuts Sod for Seven-Storey Car Park and Commercial Complex at Accra International Airport

President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport.
The project, launched on Thursday, August 27, 2026, is expected to provide approximately 2,030 covered parking spaces while introducing additional commercial, hospitality and entertainment facilities within the airport environment.
The development forms part of broader efforts to expand infrastructure at the Accra International Airport as passenger numbers continue to increase.
According to President Mahama, passenger traffic at the airport rose from about 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. He said the increase has made it necessary to expand and modernise airport infrastructure to meet growing demand.
The new complex is expected to contain retail and commercial spaces, offices, hospitality facilities and entertainment areas. It will also include a pedestrian connection to the terminal, a sky lounge and a sky observatory, which will give visitors an opportunity to watch aircraft arriving and departing from the airport.
Two hotels are also expected to form part of the wider development, providing accommodation facilities within the airport environment.
President Mahama said the project is intended not only to improve convenience for passengers but also to strengthen Ghana’s position as a competitive aviation hub in Africa.
He stressed that Ghana’s aviation sector must continue to improve its infrastructure and service standards to attract travellers, businesses and international investment.
The President also disclosed that several airport infrastructure projects are being financed through the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Company Limited, rather than through direct government funding.
These projects include a new control tower for the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, refurbishment of Terminal 2, the transfer concourse connecting Terminals 2 and 3, as well as the new car park, hotel and entertainment complex.
President Mahama said the government had not provided direct funding for these projects, describing the financing approach as an example of how state-owned institutions can leverage their financial capacity to undertake major infrastructure projects.
The completed development is expected to improve parking capacity, create additional commercial opportunities and enhance the overall experience of passengers and visitors to the airport.
The project therefore represents another step in Ghana’s broader effort to modernise its aviation infrastructure and strengthen Accra’s role as an important gateway to the country and the wider West African region.
