Mental Health and Social Media: Is the internet making young people more anxious

Written by; Regina Bless

Social media has transformed how people communicate, work and entertain themselves. However, excessive use can also create pressure, especially among young people.

Constant exposure to carefully edited lifestyles can make users feel that everyone else is more successful, beautiful, wealthy or happier than they are.

The pressure to receive likes, comments and followers can also affect self-esteem. Cyberbullying, online arguments and negative comments can further contribute to emotional distress.

Social media itself is not necessarily the problem. The challenge is how people use it and how much influence they allow it to have over their self-worth.

Taking breaks from social media, limiting screen time and maintaining real-life relationships can help create a healthier balance.
