Mining Accidents Claim About 30 Lives in Eastern Region in 2026 – NADMO
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has disclosed that approximately 30 people have lost their lives in mining-related incidents across the Eastern Region since the beginning of 2026.
Deputy Eastern Regional NADMO Director responsible for Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, Emmanuel Konja Tullah, made the disclosure while speaking to journalists at the site of a collapsed mining pit at Asaman Tamfoe, where seven people were killed.
According to him, the number of fatalities recorded so far this year demonstrates the urgent need for stronger enforcement of safety regulations within mining communities.
Call for Better Mine-Site Safety
Mr Tullah stressed the importance of concession owners and miners taking responsibility for securing mining sites, particularly abandoned pits that pose serious risks to residents and workers.
He said mining operators must ensure that disused pits are properly covered or secured to prevent people from accidentally falling into them.
“We have had a series of galamsey-related deaths numbering not less than 30 within the region in 2026. The concession owners must strengthen their oversight activities, ensuring the necessary coordination and security measures so these incidents do not recur. NADMO is going to partner with them and other agencies as we intensify this education,” he said.
Concession Owners Urged to Act
The NADMO official called on owners of mining concessions to exercise greater oversight over activities taking place on their sites.
He emphasised that operators must ensure that established safety protocols are consistently observed to minimise accidents and prevent further loss of life.
Mr Tullah also encouraged mining communities to remain vigilant and report dangerous conditions that could threaten lives.
Intensified Public Education
NADMO, he said, will collaborate with relevant government agencies, mining stakeholders and local communities to step up education on mining safety.
The initiative will focus on improving awareness, encouraging compliance with safety requirements and reducing the frequency of mining-related accidents across the Eastern Region.
The latest fatalities at Asaman Tamfoe have renewed calls for stronger monitoring and enforcement of safety standards in mining areas, particularly amid continuing concerns over illegal mining activities.
