Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson begins consultations ahead of Government’s $10bn new economy programme
The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has commenced consultations with key government ministries as preparations intensify for the rollout of the government’s New Economy transformational programme.
Dr Ato Forson, accompanied by his deputy, the Ministry’s Chief Director and other senior officials, met with the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and officials of her ministry to discuss the initiative.
The engagement forms part of efforts to coordinate the implementation of the programme, which is aimed at moving Ghana beyond economic stabilisation towards job creation, wealth generation and sustainable long-term growth.
Speaking during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, Dr Ato Forson said the New Economy agenda would focus on building a resilient and productive economy driven by domestic production.
“Through the New Economy agenda that we will unveil, we will build an economy that does not merely withstand shocks but creates jobs, generates wealth and grows on the strength of what Ghana produces,” he said.
The Finance Minister stressed that economic stabilisation was only a necessary first step towards a broader transformation of the Ghanaian economy.
“Stabilisation was never the destination. It was the price of entry. Ghana has paid that price. What comes next is the work that changes lives at scale—the work of transformation,” Dr Ato Forson added.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the New Economy programme will involve an estimated US$10 billion investment in strategic sectors of the economy.
According to the President, the initiative is expected to provide the foundation for a new phase of economic transformation focused on production, investment and job creation.
The full details of the programme, including its specific interventions, funding arrangements and sectoral priorities, are expected to be outlined in the 2027 Budget, which is scheduled to be presented in November.
The ongoing consultations with key ministries are therefore expected to help shape the policies and programmes that will underpin the government’s New Economy agenda.
