MTN Ghana Commits Over $1.1 Billion to Network Expansion, 5G Rollout

MTN Ghana has committed more than $1.1 billion over the next three years to expand and upgrade its telecommunications network, including the nationwide rollout of 5G services, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George has disclosed.

According to the Minister, the investment is expected to help address persistent network challenges, improve coverage and connectivity, and extend reliable telecommunications services to underserved communities across the country.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, September 7, Sam George said about $380 million of the total investment has been earmarked for the current year alone.

He explained that the 2026 investment will support the expansion of network coverage, the deployment of additional cell sites and the development of infrastructure required for the rollout of 5G services.

The Minister said the scale of the investment reflects MTN Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its network infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for faster and more reliable connectivity.

“MTN Ghana has committed more than $1.1 billion over the next three years, including roughly $380 million this year to expand coverage, deploy new sites and support 5G rollout,” he said.

Sam George further disclosed that MTN Ghana is undertaking the construction of 800 new cell sites nationwide, describing it as the company’s largest annual network expansion in a decade.

He said the new sites are particularly targeted at rural and peri-urban communities where network challenges have been most severe.

“I personally worked with Members of Parliament to mark the specific locations most affected in their constituencies. This is the first time such an exercise has been done at this scale, and 180 of those sites are already active and carrying traffic today,” he added.

The Minister said the government’s collaboration with telecommunications operators and Members of Parliament is aimed at ensuring that network investments are directed to communities with the greatest connectivity needs.

The expansion, he noted, is expected to improve network reliability while accelerating access to high-speed mobile services as Ghana advances its digital transformation agenda.
