Must Love Always Come With Money? The Growing Pressure to Spend in Relationships

By Zainab Ali

In today’s dating culture, love can sometimes feel like a financial competition.

For some young people, going on dates, buying expensive gifts, paying for trips or constantly sending money has become a way of proving how much they care about their partners.

Social media has arguably made the situation even more intense. Couples frequently post expensive dinners, surprise gifts, hotel stays and luxurious outings, creating the impression that a successful relationship must come with a certain lifestyle.

But does spending money really determine how much someone loves you?

While financial support can certainly be part of a healthy relationship, making money the main measure of affection can create unnecessary pressure.

Some people may find themselves spending beyond their means simply because they are afraid their partner will compare them with other couples. Others may feel disappointed when their partners cannot afford the lifestyle they see online.

The reality is that relationships come with different financial circumstances.

One couple may be able to afford expensive dates every weekend, while another may prefer a simple walk, cooking together or spending quality time at home. Neither relationship is automatically more genuine because of the amount of money being spent.

There is also a difference between generosity and financial pressure.

A person may willingly spend on their partner because they enjoy making them happy. Problems arise when spending becomes an expectation — when someone begins to feel that they must constantly buy things or provide money to remain valued in the relationship.

Healthy relationships require communication, understanding and realistic expectations.

Instead of asking, “How much did you spend on me?”, couples may sometimes need to ask, “How much effort are we putting into this relationship?”

Love should not be reduced to a price tag.

At the end of the day, expensive gifts may create memorable moments, but respect, honesty, emotional support and genuine companionship are things money cannot buy.
