NAIMOS, Security Agencies Arrest Suspected Illegal Miners in Forest Reserve

Personnel from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), in collaboration with other security agencies, have conducted an operation against suspected illegal miners operating deep inside a forest reserve.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the security agencies to clamp down on unauthorised mining activities, particularly those taking place in environmentally sensitive areas.

During the operation, several suspects were arrested for allegedly engaging in mining activities without the required permits or authorisation from the relevant authorities.

The arrests followed intelligence gathered on mining activities reportedly taking place within the protected forest area. Security personnel moved into the reserve to disrupt the operations and apprehend those suspected of violating the law.

Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, remains a major environmental concern in Ghana, with activities often linked to the destruction of forest reserves, pollution of water bodies, land degradation and the loss of biodiversity.

Authorities have repeatedly warned individuals and groups involved in unauthorised mining to cease their activities, while security agencies continue to intensify operations in areas identified as hotspots.

The latest operation underscores the government’s continued efforts to protect the country’s forest reserves and ensure that mining activities are conducted only within the framework of the law.

The arrested suspects are expected to assist investigations, after which they may face the appropriate legal processes if found to have breached the country’s mining and environmental laws.

Security agencies have also urged the public to report suspected illegal mining activities to the appropriate authorities as part of collective efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
