Parts of Ghana experienced power outages on Thursday, August 20, 2026, following a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line, according to the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
GRIDCo said the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and triggered the automatic tripping of generating units at the Akosombo power facility, as well as some thermal generating plants. The protective action was taken to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The disruption subsequently resulted in the loss of electricity supply to some parts of the country.
Following the incident, GRIDCo engineers, working together with other agencies within the power sector, isolated the affected transmission line and began a systematic restoration of the power system.
According to GRIDCo, electricity supply had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts continued in other locations. The company said its technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working to restore power to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and assured the public that it would continue to provide updates as more information became available.
The company also thanked the public for its patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continued.
