Road Indiscipline in Ghana: Why do drivers and pedestrians ignore road safety rules?

Road indiscipline has become a serious concern on Ghana’s roads. Dangerous overtaking, speeding, driving against traffic, illegal parking, using mobile phones while driving and pedestrians crossing roads carelessly are common sights.

The consequences can be devastating. Road crashes can result in deaths, permanent disabilities and financial difficulties for families.

But road safety is not only the responsibility of drivers. Pedestrians, passengers, motorcyclists, cyclists and authorities all have roles to play.

Enforcement of traffic laws is important, but education and personal responsibility are equally necessary. Citizens must understand that following road safety rules is not about avoiding punishment—it is about protecting human lives.
