Scientist Urges Ghana To Demand Compensation Over Annual Bagre Dam Spillage

Stakeholders in the Upper East Region are pushing for urgent measures to address the recurring devastation caused by the annual spillage of Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam.

Speaking at a regional forum, Environmental Scientist Dr. Raymond Atanga said Ghana can no longer absorb the annual losses to farmlands, and livelihoods without recourse.

He urge government to pursue compensation from Burkina Faso, citing provisions under the Volta Basin Authority’s charter which governs transboundary water management in the region.
Local leaders are also calling for improved early caution systems, better flood mitigation infrastructure, and stronger bilateral engagement to minimize future damage.

The Bagre Dam is opened yearly by Burkinabe authorities to prevent overflow, but the released water floods communities along the White Volta in northern Ghana.
