SHS Students Close Today: What Parents Should Expect as Students Return Home

By Zainab Ali

For many Ghanaian families, Friday, August 21, marks the beginning of a long-awaited break as students in Senior High Schools operating under the single-track calendar officially close the academic year.

According to the 2026/2027 academic calendar released by the Ghana Education Service (GES), Single Track Form One and Form Two students are scheduled to end the academic year today, August 21, 2026. Transitional schools, however, will remain in session until September 4, 2026.

The closure means thousands of students will return home after spending months in school, bringing excitement for students and a new set of responsibilities for parents and guardians.

For students, the vacation is an opportunity to rest, reconnect with family and friends, and take a break from the demanding school routine. However, parents may also need to prepare for the changes that come with having their children back home.

The long vacation can be a good period for parents to engage their children in meaningful activities rather than allowing them to spend most of their time sleeping or on their phones.

Parents can encourage students to read, learn practical skills, assist with household responsibilities or participate in activities that can help them develop beyond the classroom.

For students moving into another academic year, the break can also provide an opportunity to reflect on their academic performance and identify areas that need improvement.

Meanwhile, the GES calendar indicates that the 2026/2027 academic year is scheduled to begin on September 18, 2026.

As students return home, parents and guardians are therefore encouraged to use the vacation not only as a period of relaxation but also as an opportunity to support their children’s personal and academic development.

After months of schoolwork, examinations and strict routines, the holiday has officially arrived — but how students spend it could determine how prepared they are when school resumes.
