Thousands of sympathisers, traditional leaders gather in Yendi for installation of Dagbon Regent
Thousands of sympathisers, traditional leaders and well-wishers have converged on Yendi, the traditional seat of the Kingdom of Dagbon, for the installation of a Regent following the death of the Overlord, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, on July 11, 2026.
The town has come alive with traditional drumming, the firing of ceremonial muskets and cultural displays by local warriors as mourners and dignitaries continue to arrive for the historic ceremony.
While the public activities continue, some customary rites are being performed behind closed doors ahead of the official installation of the Regent.
The Chairman of the Grounds Committee, Lamashegu Naa Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, said all preparations had been completed to ensure a smooth and peaceful ceremony.
He explained that the installation would be conducted in two phases, beginning with a private customary ceremony before the Regent is officially presented to the public.
According to him, adequate arrangements have been made to maintain law and order throughout the event.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yendi, Sugri Muniru, assured residents and visitors that the municipality remains safe and well-prepared to host the ceremony.
He disclosed that more than 600 security personnel have been deployed across Yendi to provide security and ensure the peaceful conduct of the installation.
The installation of the Regent forms part of Dagbon’s traditional succession process following the passing of the Ya-Na and is expected to pave the way for the kingdom’s customary transition rites.
