Unemployment vs. Entrepreneurship: What is the real solution for Ghana’s youth?

Youth unemployment remains one of Ghana’s major social and economic challenges. Every year, thousands of young people enter the job market, but the number of available formal jobs remains limited.

Entrepreneurship is often presented as the solution. Young people are encouraged to start businesses, learn vocational skills and create employment for themselves and others. However, starting a business is not always easy.

Access to capital, high operating costs, taxation, unreliable infrastructure and limited markets can make it difficult for small businesses to survive.

While entrepreneurship should certainly be encouraged, it cannot completely replace the need for decent formal employment.

Ghana therefore needs a balanced approach—creating jobs while also providing young entrepreneurs with affordable financing, skills and an environment where businesses can grow.
