The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has recorded a significant improvement in Core Mathematics performance in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates.

According to provisional results released on September 4 and signed by Head of Public Affairs, 60.75% of candidates obtained grades A1 to C6 in Core Mathematics, up from 48.73% in 2025.

The 60.75% represents 306,234 out of the 512,862 candidates who sat the exam from 1,022 schools.

Despite the improvement, 14.82% still obtained F9, while 10.80% had D7 and 10.74% had E8.The 2025 performance was the lowest in the last four years.

WAEC data shows Core Mathematics moved from 62.23% in 2023, to 66.86% in 2024, then crashed to 48.73% in 2025, before recovering to 60.75% this year.

In an interview, Mr Kapi explained that the rebound reflects better preparation after the 2025 shock, and familiarity with competency-based questions.

Overall, three of the four core subjects improved in 2026:Social Studies: 78.04% (up from 55.82% in 2025) – best performing subjectEnglish Language: 62.40% (down from 69.00% in 2025)Integrated Science: 62.08% (up from 57.74% in 2025)Core Mathematics: 60.75% (up from 48.73% in 2025)WAEC noted that while Maths, Science and Social Studies have varied over the last four years, English Language has recorded a progressive decline from 73.11% in 2023 to 62.40% in 2026.

In a directive communicated through the Directors-General of the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana TVET Service, the Education Minister strongly cautioned all heads of second-cycle institutions to desist from admitting students manually or outside the approved CSSPS process.
