Why Are Young People Choosing Situationships Over Relationships?

By Zainab Ali

Dating has changed. These days, you can spend months talking to someone, going on dates, being intimate and acting like a couple, yet neither of you is willing to officially call it a relationship.

Welcome to the era of the situationship.

A situationship is that confusing space between friendship and a committed relationship. There is emotional connection, attraction and sometimes intimacy, but there is no clear commitment.

So why are so many young people choosing this arrangement?

For some, it is the fear of commitment. Relationships come with expectations, responsibility and emotional vulnerability. A situationship can feel easier because people get companionship without necessarily accepting the responsibilities that come with a serious relationship.

Social media and dating apps may also have contributed to this. With so many options available, some people are constantly wondering whether someone “better” is just one swipe away. Instead of building something with one person, they keep their options open.

There is also the fear of getting hurt. Some young people have experienced heartbreak, cheating or toxic relationships, so they prefer keeping things casual rather than becoming emotionally invested.

But situationships can also become complicated when one person develops stronger feelings than the other.

One person may think, “We are basically together,” while the other thinks, “We never said we were dating.”

Perhaps the real issue is not whether situationships are good or bad. It is whether both people are honest about what they want.

Because sometimes, the biggest problem is not being in a situationship. It is being in one while secretly hoping it becomes a relationship.
