British No 1 Johanna Konta was knocked out of this year’s French Open by American teenage superstar Coco Gauff on Sunday.
Ninth seed Konta, a semi-finalist in Paris last year, put in an error-strewn display in going down 6-3 6-3 to the American.
Gauff was making her main-draw debut at Roland Garros but she is already a proven Grand Slam competitor having reached the fourth round of Wimbledon and the Australian Open and the third round of the US Open.
But Gauff, ranked 51 in the world, just two short of her career best, headed into the clash having only won one of her last four matches.
She dealt with the sky-high expectations having already shown herself to be extremely mentally tough and tactically astute and it was she who played like the veteran in finding her best at the important moments and drawing errors from the Konta racket.
