A Virginia family is receiving praise after they found almost seven figures cash in the middle of the road, and decided to turn it into authorities.

Last Saturday afternoon, the Schantz family was out for a drive when the car in front of them swerved out of the way before hitting what looked like a big bag of trash. The Schantz family didn’t have enough time and ran the bag over. Then, instead of leaving what they just thought was garbage lying in the road, they decided to pick it up and put it in the back of their pickup truck. When they saw a second bag down the road, they did the same as with the first.

Later at home, they, of course, realized what they had actually found. The family goes to church with one of the county’s sheriffs, who advised them to call his office.

Emily Schantz said her family never even considered keeping the money. “Do the right thing and return it,” she told CBS 6 News Richmond. “Because it didn’t belong to us.” Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies of money labeled “cash vault.”

Authorities think the bags belong to the US Postal Service, who was headed to a bank when they were lost. A County Sheriff’s spokesperson said of the family, “For someone so honest and willing to give that almost a million dollars back, it’s exceptional on their part.”
